How to find content ideas for social media

Out of ideas? No time to think up new content angles? Feeling the small business overwhelm? I hear you. I see you. I’ve got you. Here are some easy ways to find new content topics, fresh content formats, to ensure your content is engaging for your audience and simple and easy to create for you.

How to brainstorm new content ideas

Check your DMs and comments. What are people asking about or chatting about? These are likely to be hot topics worthy of your focus when it comes to new posts. Check the news. Are there any stories going on which you can tie in with your business or products?

How to find new content ideas

Answer the public www.answerthepublic.com is a great and free tool which helps you understand the kinds of questions the public are asking around your business and products. Enter a search term related to your niche and get a ton of content ideas for your next blog or post or reel.

On Etsy start writing your keywords into the search bar and see what terms come up. These are the products or search terms - ie personalised gifts for dad - that are proving popular right now. How can you tie into those?

Go back to your content pillars

When in doubt, check in with your content topics. Ideally you should have 5 content themes you talk about regularly. This not only help you focus your efforts on business-supporting themes, it also makes content creation quick and easy as you’re not searching around for new content topic ideas.

What’s trending on social media right now?

Check the Explore Page on Instagram. What’s blowing up on TikTok at the minute? How could you get in on that action? Just make sure your link is authentic and right for your brand, rather than just aimlessly jumping on the next big trend.

Check Google suggestions

Sign out of Google, start writing a keyword into the search bar and see what suggestions Google gives you in the drop down as you write. These will be the terms and topics that are popular searches right now, and give you new angles to talk about within your content themes.

Look inwards

If you’re struggling for ideas out in the world, check in with yourself instead. Personal stories do extremely well on social media. I recently blew up my reel views by over 10x just by adding a personal anecdote to the message I wanted to give. Making it personal makes it more relatable for building those connections within community. People respond to vulnerabilities, honesty and showing your human side! And it’s what makes your content truly original. No one can replicate you. It’s the ONLY thing we EVER have that is unique. So use it to your advantage.

Check your insights

Another way to look inwards is to check your data. What kinds of content and formats have people responded to best in the past? What kinds of content on your favourite accounts has performed best. Use those findings to put out more of what’s working well for you, your current audience and your target audience.
